Fencing
Filling in the membership form
I wonder what it is to belong,
which cards I wish to carry
and what others I tend to despise.
If sleeping in the same dorm
implies we’re meant to get along,
I might prefer to parry
to save myself from telling lies.
It seems I’m only lukewarm
when I think of joining the throng,
I’m actually beginning to tarry:
am I ready for such compromise?
I’ve never had an instinct to swarm
or thought it’s the way to be strong,
I don’t even want to marry:
All I want is to equalise.
